Travel Guide: Lake Como, Italy

Falling in love with Lago di Como (Lake Como) is inevitable upon arrival. Within two minutes of driving along it’s perimeter, I quickly realised it’s one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I’ve ever been (and may ever go)! The following 4 days were filled with exploring (and consuming) as many corners of the lake as possible; including stunning historic villas, lazy lido sessions, multiple servings of lobster linguine, and sneaky drive by’s of George Clooney’s Lake Como residence (just in case he felt like inviting us in for a Nespresso).

WHERE TO EAT, STAY & PLAY IN LAKE COMO:

WHERE TO EAT: For the best lake views, lobster linguine & deconstructed tiramisu book a table on the terrace at the family-run La Darsena. For the ultimate in traditional Lake Como dining try the 6-course set menu at Locanda Dell’Isola Comacina (which hasn’t changed since 1947) – situated on it’s very own island in the middle of the Lake (& only accessible by boat) it’s an unforgettable & unmissable food experience.

WHERE TO STAY: For elegant 3-star accommodation in the best area of Tremezzo (our favorite corner of the lake) look no further than Hotel Villa Marie. For the ultimate in 5-star luxury, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is unsurpassable. Think a complimentary sweet bar in reception, your own stunning lido on the lake, & the kind of hospitality that will make you feel like a movie star… (if you aren’t already one)!

WHERE TO PLAY: Car hire is essential for driving around the lake & exploring/sticky-breaking every single corner. Be sure to visit the historic Villa Carlotta & it’s 70,000 square meters of breathtaking botanic gardens (take a picnic if you can), L’Oleandra (George Clooney’s luxurious Lake Como Residence in picturesque Laglio), & Villa del Balbianello (to sample the elaborate terraced gardens made famous in Star Wars & Casino Royale). Another must is taking a day trip on the ferry to Bellagio – for shopping & ALL of the best gelato.
